Perfect for a little space
I bought this to use under my desk to keep my feet warm. It's perfect and as you can see its little (about the size of a medium coffee), so its not in the way of me hitting it with my feet. Theres a safety button on the bottom so the heater stops working when its tipped over, picked up, or not on a level surface. I like that feature alot, definitely recommend purchasing if you need a little heater at a decent price!

Great heater for a freezing office
I work in a cubicle farm and my office building is always too cold for me. Sweaters don't quite keep it warm enough, so I wanted a little space heater.
I am very conscious of the wattage these space heaters put out and I didn't want to be tripping breakers so I looked for a low wattage one. I also wanted something that had tip over protection since it will be by my feet.
This little 500w heater checked all the boxes so I bought it and brought it into work. It fits discreetly under my cubicle, is very quiet (sounds like a computer fan on high), and outputs just enough heat to keep me warm. I couldn't ask for more.
Now there are no heat settings, there's just an on/off switch, so look elsewhere if you want more control. The heat also pretty concentrated to directly in front of the unit, so there is not much heat output if you're not in its direct path and pretty close to it.
I can't comment on the durability quite yet, but it functions just as I wanted.
If you're looking for a no-fuss, low wattage heater, this seems like a great choice.
Great Heater for Small Spaces
First off, this is the second Amazon Basics heater that I have purchased in 2 weeks and it is because I LOVE them! I keep one (pink) in my bathroom and the other one (white) in my home office. Before I get ready to shower, I turn the heater on and close the door and it heats up so good! I recommend this heater to anyone who likes to have a warm and toasty bathroom and warm office or small space. Actually, I am going to buy another one for when I go into the office at work!
It's cute and little.
The price: is okay. There isnt a heat control dial so just one set temperature.
The size: is perfect for why I bought it. I wanted something to keep my feet warm and this is just the right size. And can be easily stored since it is so small.
It is as pleasing to the eye as any small heater. Although it is my new friend, I am slightly disappointed for reasons I've stated. It does get hot if you are too close to it so I'm battling it by having to turn it off and on every fee minutes because there are no heat controls. I do like the safety feature on the bottom. So this if it gets tipped over it picked up, it immediately turns off. However since it is a heater the front metal mesh part is hot so be careful when picking up or moving.
Basically it's a good heater but for the price you could spend just a few dollars more on a different heater that has heat control settings. If you are using this for an entire room or big space, I'm not sure how warm the entire space will be but I can tell you I dont see this thing having a problem with warming up a small bedroom or bathroom.
Great bargain!
So happy with my little space heater! I tried a couple of other ones before, and this was the keeper. It runs quietly enough, doesn't have any distracting noises, and didn't emit any funky or chemical-laden smells (unlike a lot of other space heaters at the same price point).
It produces enough heat to keep me working in my office without having to wear gloves/hat/heavy sweater, but doesn't go out of control. Also it does have the added safety feature that if it flips over, it will stop functioning. The cord doesn't get hot (another good sign) and the unit doesn't get overly warm. Regardless, I'm still paranoid of house fires and I keep the unit on a little stone coaster that I have, and I unplug it for the evening when I'm finished.
This definitely isn't meant to heat an entire room - when the heat went out in my apartment for a day, I ran it in my living room, and while it definitely took the bite out of the cold air, if you walked away from it, you were cold. It's perfect for office/personal use, but not much more than that - but for the price, it's a great deal!
Great 500W Heater
I use this heater in an unlikely place to heat and dry some region that has previously seen water in-gress; just as a remedy while I do repairs; it has a solid tip-over kill-switch that I really appreciate and it is the equivalent of a pair of 250W bulbs - so it is just enough heat for an enclosed area; and, it is not very hot past about twelve inches, so it is safe that way too; be sure to give it the margin (room) that the instructions call for, of course.
bigger than it looks
All the photos and customer photos make it look like a tiny speaker that can fit in your palm. That is soo not the case. It's pretty big. But I really like it. And I like the shape. The heat output is nice. I can't wait for winter. I got it to do my Jamberry nails. This was cheaper than the Jamberry heater. That's a five pd bag of flour btw.
Update: so it's Feb 2021 and I've actually used it to keep warm too. It's been super cold where I am. Also where I work! So I get to use this when I'm freezing and it's magical. I feel so deliciously warm. I love that if it's knocked over in the slightest it turns off. Super safe!
Perfect for a Small Bathroom on Chilly/Freezing Days
As the season changes to chilly mornings and winter approaches, I bought this to use in my small bathroom so I could run it for 20-30 minutes before hopping in the shower. I purchased a house two years ago that was built in 1966 and instead of running the whole house heater just to warm up the bathroom, this little ceramic heater does the job perfectly. Further, my 1966 bathroom does not have much counter space and although I could place this on the floor, I prefer to have it on my vanity for better heat dispersal. Because of the tip-over safety feature, I am perfectly comfortable to let the heater run with the door closed while I'm grabbing my morning coffee before showering. As a native Southern Californian, I am still not used to the absolute cold mornings despite living in Boston for 3 years and now in Ohio for 15 years. I leave the heater running while in the shower so when I pull back the shower curtain, the room is still a comfortable temperature. Then after I've dried off and slipped on my winter robe, I can then face the bracing blast of cold air when I open the bathroom door.
Great little heater. I'm considering getting another one to keep under my desk. Again, not that I expect this little heater to heat up a big room but to give me a direct source of heat to take the chill out of the air. Highly recommend but be realistic as to how you are going to use it. Don't think that it will do anything in a space any larger than a modern half-bath or under the desk by your feet because it will not work in those applications. In those situations, you will need a larger, higher output heater than this model. The price point is very attractive too.
One note: As with most electronics of this ilk, there is a rather large flag-like warning on the cord. I just wrapped it around the cord and either affix a twist tie or a rubber band to contain the warning (which is almost the same size as this heater!) without cutting it off and potentially inadvertently slice the cord.
Hope this review is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
Great little heater
This is a great little personal heater with not too many frills. Depending on your needs, the pros may outweigh the cons.
Pros:
Heats up quickly
Powerful for such a small heater
Sleek and compact design
Not too loud
Lots of safety features like anti-tip and conforms to safety standards
Cons:
Huge safety stickers on the outer casing on either side take away from the overall look
Does not oscillate
Only one temperature setting
Small red light on the side might bother some people
*I purchased this product with my own money and my review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion. I hope you find it helpful. Thanks for reading!
The review you're looking for. ??
#1 Ignore the cancer warning label on the plug. I'm from California, and you'd think it's australia with the proposition 65 list of things that'll kill you. The warning is a legality, because there may be cutting oil residue on the ceramic coil separators (which, yes, if heated isn't good for you). And If it's that much of a concern, run the heater outside for 15-20min, and any miniscule residue will burn off (and no I didn't smell anything or feel anything having turned in on in my house after opening it).
#2 It's a space heater, not a hand warmer. Yes, it's going to get hot, but it's meant for heating a space, not your hands (so don't touch it in operation). It's about as hot at a hairdryer on full heat. So if you need to move it, don't be lazy, unplug it (or tilt it over. It has a safety switch it rests on to make sure it's upright).
#3 Usage. I've the heater in a 14'x16'x8' room. The door to it has a draft guard, and one window (double pane) that's 2'x6' horizontal (weird I know) with no shade or blinds. The room holds at 76°F with this little heater after about the first 30min of turning it on. This room houses exotic pets, and nothing has shown any ill effects (doubling back to the cancer warning). But my lizard and rainforest critters sure are happier with the extra heat!
While I wish there was a temperature knob, but I also know the price would be higher if it did. And while the price is pretty low, my common sense tells me it's a safe unit because I'm pretty sure Amazon isn't trying to cut insurance checks for house fires. Great heater, does the job I need it too, and I have literally no complaints.

This heater will not heat up a bedroom...if that's what you need look for something else.... However I do use it regularly in my bedroom When using it you will have to sit close to it which I do not mind because I have a very hot blanket in which I can sleep under at night...Also after our morning walks when it is cold out my dog appreciates to sit in front of it because he is small and can use a quick warm-up... Without making everyone else uncomfortable. It is not loud and has lasted more than a year and seems to be quite durable.... I also have a small work closet in which I do arts and crafts The room is not well insulated nor has windows This heater will warm up the entire room quite nicely... Again the room is very small about the size of a bathroom or walk-in panty closet... I have also used it inside an ice cold call center underneath my cubicle desk To warm my feet....When any coworkers came into my cubicle they immediately notice a difference And many would ask... Why is it so warm in your cubicle? I told them it was because I had a big heart... as I didn't think my supervisor would take too kind to me bringing in the small appliance However due to the fact that It works quickly and quietly to distribute a source of heat... I have purchased a second one so that I do not have to transport the one back and forth. If you're still not sure whether you should purchase this think of it like this it's like a tiny campfire you can plug in to warm your body It will not reach you across a room or anything more than a foot you will not feel a difference You literally have to sit on top of it So it's not for everyone but it has saved me from shivering in both public and private settings Good luck with your purchase

At first I was skeptical after reading SOME of the reviews, but with mixed reviews - I had mixed feelings and bought it to find out for myself. Kinda like a bad review on a movie - some like, some don't, but with a movie you can't get your money back. There's the difference. Anyway, at first I really didn't think it made much of a difference in my very tiny bathroom - HOWEVER, I kept using it and oddly, after awhile it seems to put our more heat each time. So about 10-15 minutes before I shower I simply turn it on and close the door. When I'm ready I have a warm bathroom. Ta-Da!
Update: 5/3/19 - The more I use it, the better it works. Weird, I know.

Def worth the money! For the size and price this thing puts out some serious heat. I don’t even mind that it doesn’t have different heat settings (just an on/off switch). I bought this heater specifically because it’s only 500 watts and I am attempting to not trip any breakers in the office. I work in a cube farm of engineers and they always keep it SO cold. This little heater is perfect for under my desk. Side note; I also love how quiet it is.

Like many, I now work from home more often than not. To my immediate left is a large sliding glass door that lets cold air spill in from outside. Even with slippers and pajama pants, my feet are still freezing while the rest of me is relatively comfortable.
In comes this little heater! It keeps my feet toasty warm all while radiating heat under my desk which rises up around the edges to keep my whole body warm. The 500watt draw is great so your electric bill won't really feel it either. As for noise, it's quiet with a slight "white noise" effect. With music or TV, it's not noticeable. It works perfect.
To place it, I cut a piece of polyurethane board, punched some holes in it, and strapped it to the support bar under my desk. At first there was the worry that the heat might melt the board, but as one can see directly under the heater the temperature is only 84°F (28°C). The heater puts out heat at about190° - 200°F (90° - 93°C) give or take a few degrees. This unit is not capable of heating an entire room, but in a bathroom, or small bedroom it'll definitely take the chill out of the air.
Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good heater but needs temperature protection for peace of mind in confined spaces

Some of the reviews I read say the heater is too hot to touch but I haven't found that to be true. We have several of these heaters and move them around after running for hours with no issue. One of the heaters runs 24 hours a day in our shop and has for over a month without fail. We also have on in the basement of our motorhome heating the space around the black and gray tanks and the area where water enters the camper. Overheat protection would be great in this situation but we just use a temperature controller to turn the unit on and off. The screen on the front can get pretty hot but all heaters have a very hot protection screen in front of the heater coils but the sides of this unit do not get hot. Just be mindful that it is a small heater before touching and let it cool a bit if you're worried about it. Other than that this heater performs as advertised. Just order 2 more for backups.

It’s definitely no space heater, but it helps keep me sane in the 65 degree office where I sit directly under the vent. The heat output is great for me as someone who likes it warm, but I have some serious gripes about the way the metal grate in the front gets SCALDING hot. The plastic part is fine, but if you accidentally touch that metal you will almost certainly burn yourself. Plus it has two temperature zones: devil’s piss hot when you’re directly in front of the vent, or lukewarm on the periphery. There’s not too much of a comfy in-between. But beggars can’t be choosers and for the price, size, and low noise level, it’s definitely a worthwhile buy for me.

I bought this to keep my plants warm during the winter. When it first arrived it was a particularly cold day and i put it in the small area i wanted heated. In the beginning i couldnt tell if it was really making much of a difference so i bought a wall thermometer. And it did warm it up so i was pleased and ignored it. Then, after some time i started noticing it was heating up my entire bedroom. it was getting so hot that i would wake up sweaty. So i had to start unplugging it and allowing the room to cool off and then plugging it back in later once things cooled down. Yesterday i forgot to unplug it and when i came home from work i could feel the heat as soon as i walked into the front door. The bedroom was a sauna again. I ended up purchasing some smart outlets so i can just run the heater on a timer now.
Obviously there are features that would make this better. Like different heat settings, a timer, or sensor that turns off once it reaches the temperature you want. But lets be real. You're looking at a 20$ heater. If you want those functions you're going to want to buy a more expensive heater. But this thing is great for what it is.
Like i mentioned, if the area you are trying to warm is very cold this may take a little time to get things up to temperature. But once things are warmed up this will do a phenomenal job of keeping it warm(and sometimes hot ??). I've only had mine for 1 week so i cant speak for how long it will work. But so far I'm very pleased with its performance. A

This dude takes my room from 60 degrees to 70 degrees after 2 hours or so. The room is 13x12. I usually just use it when I'm at my desk and it takes the edge off while keeping electric costs down to run it. It's a nice, warm little heater. If you're looking for something that heats up your room to 80 in 15 minutes you'll need a larger one. Safety feature on it that if you lift it up or it falls over it shuts off. I like that but just keep in mind you'll need to put it on the table and not soft carpet.

This is all I need to heat up my space before bed or first thing in the morning. Space heaters typically start at 1500 watts or have dual 750/1500 watt settings. Was happy to find this one at 500 watts so I never had to worry about the draw. I like the size and simple toggle switch for On/Off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Personal Heater... Not A Traditional Space Heater!
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2019
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
This little heater is absolutely perfect for warming up your personal space. This heater will not heat your room. I use it in my home office to warm up my desk area, which is next to a large window. On days like today, when it's only 8F outside, and the heat is set in the house to 65F, it can feel chilly at my desk. This little heater does a great job of warming up my personal space at my desk by 5 to 10 degrees. It is also very quiet, relative to traditional space heaters.
Not a Traditional Space Heater... this is not a traditional space heater and will not heat up your room. It is instead a personal heater, and you warm from feeling the warm air on you. For example, I run the heater under my desk. I have a thermometer just above it on my desk and also on the other side of the room. While the temperature rises 5-10 degrees at my desk, when the heater is on. The temperature is unchanged 10ft away, even after running for several hours. This is the magic of this heater... you don't get too hot, when it runs next to you... and it uses little energy as compared to traditional space heaters that indeed heat the room.
A couple notes of caution... I do wish the heater had feet, to raise it off the ground a bit... for it will heat up flooring, desk surface etc, beyond what I would like. Thus, I set the heater on a step stool, which keeps the direct heat off the floor (see photo). I also use a timed outlet for the heater, running it 3 hours at a time. This seems enough to get the area warmed and keeps me from forgetting to turn it off, should I leave the room for an extended period.

I was surprised with how well this heater worked for what it is. I wasn't expecting something that was going to heat entire rooms and make them nice and toasty, but it is perfect for heating an office cubicle that might be a little too cold or putting on your desk to add a little warmth in the winter months.
It's really quiet and if it wasn't for the heat it was putting out, you'd almost forget it was even there. It runs at 500W which means if you're using it for one hour you're only using .5 kWh of electricity per hour which means like 7 cents an hour, so it's cheap to run too.
The only downside is that it only has one temperature control -- on. If you want to be able to choose how much heat it puts out, there are more expensive models in the same line that have a control.

This little unit is 500w of hot heat, so its great for a small/mid sized room. No temp control, just on and off, so be aware of that.
The screen does get quite hot after about an hour so be careful.
Also due to the shape, it "can" be a bit tipsy if not on a solid surface.
But it does heat up a room without setting off the circuit breaker, which is what I needed.

It realistically won’t heat a room, at least by no means quickly, but it does provide a nice bubble of heat if you’re right by it. That’s pretty much what I was looking for, so it’s perfect for my needs.
I would like to emphasize the above point. It is a SMALL bubble of heat. If I move more than about three feet away from the front of the heater, I cannot even feel the heat.

I actually am very impressed with the case it's in, it seems well made so far. White it's not metal, that can also be good because plastic cannot short out against anything ever. It's very simple, just on/off switch and a tip switch/sensor on the bottom. What impresses me the most is the heater is cool to the touch on all of it's sides, except for the metal mesh in the front. And, it's putting out a nice amount of heat, in a very small package. And for $17.09 you can't beat it! I'll add to this review if anything changes, but so far this is a GREAT heater I can easily pack in my bag to take to the office in the winter if the office heat is not working well enough!

Our electric bill has done something like quadrupled in the last decade. So I did the math and even if I leave this on 24 hours a day, it is less than a dollar a day. That works for my poor little frozen icicle toes.
Heat comes out fast and serious. Toes are warm. This is my report from Frostbite alley.

It’s a tiny little heater for small spaces so it’s fine for what it’s supposed to do. The safety features are great, if it moves at all it immediately shuts off. Output is pretty low so don’t plan on this to heat your room up. The fan is barely noticeable about 3 feet in front of it, but to me that’s a plus. I got it to put in our bathroom to warm up the outside of the shower, our master bath is far enough away from the central heat that it’s 2-3 degrees cooler in there, so the heater makes up that shortcoming. There’s no temperature control, it’s either on or off.
As long as you’re expecting nothing more, this is just fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Basics 500w space heater - Depends on your needs
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022
Color: WhiteVerified Purchase
People who complain that it's only good for a cubicle or to warm your feet or hands at your computer likely have bigger rooms or live where the winter is much more severe than here, the S.F. Bay Area.
This winter started early here, i.e. before the solstice, and more severe than most recent winters. I scrambled to keep warm with my several space heaters, concentrating on my bedroom and kitchen. A month ago I bought a Lasko CT22445 from Costco that was feature rich (oscillating, 3 heat settings, remote, thermostat with ECO mode, tip-over protection), bought another 2 weeks later. I eventually decided to return them because I couldn't abide the smell, and did 2 days ago. I shopped space heaters online and decided on this very modest "500w" offering which looks like a toy. My bedroom is not quite 10' x 10' plus a couple closets. I have two overhead lights, one being a 250w heat lamp pointed at the floor. I only turn that on when it's too cool/cold for me. That heat lamp does boost the warmth, but very slowly. It takes a couple hours to boost it 5F. That definitely helps, but when it is really cold it's not enough. Most all of the space heaters nowadays have top heat setting of 1500w (although I imagine they all measure less than that), and a low setting of 900w. Try finding a space heater with 3 heat settings or one with a low at ~500w! I wasn't able to find more than one or two at Amazon, and the reviews scared me away. The Lasko heaters I returned did have 3 settings, but the lowest measured around 750w, which is more than I want for my bedroom (but usable). This Amazon Basics 500w space heater measures 475w on my Kasa KP115 energy monitoring smart plug, less than the advertised 500w, but I'm OK with that. Added to my heat lamp, the room warms 3x as fast as with the heat lamp alone. I can manage with that.
This thing does have a smell, but not annoying like those Lasko heaters I returned, at least it hasn't bothered me so far (couple days, modest use) and I assume that the smell will abate some. The noise? Well, it is more than I anticipated, but I'm pretty used to it already.
This heater is minimal in most every way but does have the tip-over safety feature. It's overpriced for what you get at ~$24, but it is a fit for my usage. I have it on a plate on the floor.

A cold snap hit Washington state and we have not had a furnace in our manufactured home for many years. We managed just fine most of the time. I have left this 1 on for 3 days straight and had no problem with it. It has a tip over switch so I'm not worried about my grandsons knocking it over. The only place on the heater that gets HOT is the front metal grill part. The sides, back, top and bottom stay cool. It works exactly the way I needed.
Now there isn't MAJOR heat output, but like I said my bathroom is fairly small. It is shaped funny but if it was a perfect rectangle it would be 12'x8' or so. It keeps the chill off. There is no temperature control, it is just on or off. The tip over switch is the most important safety feature for me and I am sure if somehow it overheated it would shut down. Nothing fancy but does exactly what it claims

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Heater
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020

This is a great little heater. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars across the board is for two reasons. One, you have to place this pretty close to you to feel the heat, which is fine if you are using in a small space. If you are thinking this will warm a small room, it absolutely will not. The second reason I took a star off is because you cannot adjust the temp. Your options are on and off. If you are looking for a simple heater then this is for you but if your needs are a little more then a small space and temp options, you may be disappointed. Overall though I think this is a great little heater for a small space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warming up to it... (Update)
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
(Update) I'm warming up to it now having moved it from underneath my desk to another place to the side. I've actually moved it a couple of places around my place and it's kind of becoming my new best friend. I do appreciate the safety feature underneath it that way if it falls forward it won't continue to operate. I do stand by my suggestion that they put graduating heat settings on it rather than just the one setting, but I understand for the price point that's what you're going to get. The biggest suggestion I could make, if they were to create a new model, would be to move where they OFF and ON button is because it's on the back, down at the bottom in the center, so you literally have to turn around the heater which means touching it and getting close to the heat to turn it off. I considered returning it before but it's proving to be useful and for the price point and the energy saving at 500 watts, you can't beat it. But again, this heater will probably get too hot to be placed right by your feet like say you're trying to hide it in an office space. In other words; it puts off a great deal of heat so depending on where you need to place it and whether or not you need it to be discreet and really close, or you're looking for something that puts off more heat that you can use to heat a small space will determine if this is the right heater for you. It is a good little heater that puts off a good amount of heat, and it's relatively quiet.
My previous review titled, "One Setting - HOT"...
This is a great little 500 watt heater puts off a tremendous amount of heat, so if you wanted to use this for a small space sitting it far away from you, this would be a great heater, and I highly recommend it for that situation. But in close proximity on top of your desk, or under your desk (which is what I needed for my feet because I have a desk placed in a cold corner of my house), you're going to get overwhelmed with heat. The other bad thing is; there's only one very heat setting, AND the button is on the BACK of the heater at the bottom, so you literally have to put your hand all the way around it to turn it around and turn it off. Ergonomically, it would be much better placed on top or on the side for easy access. Having a LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH setting with a more conveniently placed placed ON and OFF button would take this heater from good, to out of this world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Heater For A Small Space
Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2022
Color: BlueVerified Purchase
Where I live we have been having some freezing temps recently. When I work from home I primarily work in my "office" area which is really a vanity area in my bedroom. The floor is tile and because the heating vent is on the other side of the bedroom it gets cold in my little area. I wanted a little heater that didn't take up too much space and wasn't going to break the bank to help keep the chill out. This little guy actually does a great job of that especially since I added a little black out curtain to my space to really give me a little more privacy and a nicer background for Zoom calls. After running for a few minutes it gets the small area ( 30 sq ft) area nice and warm and maintains a good temp throughout the day. I keep it on the tile floor and it is small enough it doesn't get in the way.
It does not have temp controls, only an on and off switch. It does have a safety button that if it knocks over it will automatically shut off. It doesn't get very hot although I don't touch the front grate when it is on or shortly after turning it off although after about a minute or two it is fine to touch. I'm pleased with this purchase for my needs. If you are looking for something to heat an entire room and not a small closet size area than you should look for something else but if you have a small contained area this will work.

Adding more info!! So--- I have figured out that although still not great for a "small room" - under the desk works if you find the right height, position and angle!!
------
This product is barely suitable as an under the desk foot warmer. It will not warm an entire office, bedroom or den (drafty or otherwise) - I am curious about what the description means by "any other small area" as it is barely heating under a desk, let alone an actual room.
If you place the little heater right up against your feet and or lower legs, you do feel some warmth and in a cold space, it is appreciated. That said ,it was only $23.64 and will take a slight edge off the cold.
"Perfect for drafty or unheated rooms, or simply when you need an extra bit of warmth on a chilly night, the personal heater is a comforting addition to an office, bedroom, den or any other small area. Switch it on and experience an even, consistent flow of warm air generated by fast-heating ceramic coils."

4.0 out of 5 stars 500 Watts Is Not Warm Enough
Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2021

Pretty pink color. Simple design, yet stylish. 500 watts hasn't short-circuited or blown a fuse, yet. It provides a quick warm-up if you sit approximately 6 inches away from the heater. No thermostat to adjust. Just a simple 'on' and 'off switch. To tell you the truth, I've grown a little dissatisfied with this heater. It was fine in the autumn season wearing a long sleeve-shirt and jackets. But now it's winter time. And I desperately need a heater with more output. The picture of my cat blocking my personal heater nearly touching it shows how weak the output is. But it is putting-out heat. And the cat isn't burning, which is good. But still... The room is cold. And I'm not feeling any heat around this cat. Well.. Enough with my rambling. The point is, 500 watts isn't enough to warm a room in the winter time.

I’m getting exactly, if not more what I paid for from this tiny box. There’s not much to it—a manual power switch and an tipping switch that is makes it so it can only be turned on if it’s standing upright.
It pumps out a good amount of heat directly in front of it. The encasing does not get warm on any side, including the bottom. I’ve got it right on my desk with no worries about it melting the faux-wood or any peripherals.
There’s no temperature or other safety features. That being said, I have been sitting very comfortably about a foot away from it for an hour now and it is keeping me warm in my little ice box of a basement office!
Might just pick up another couple for the garage!

The product works as described and outputs heat pretty well for its size and price point. However, I noticed a chemical smell from when I first opened the package and turning the heater on made it even worse. Gonna have it run outside for a few hours to see if the smell will go away but if it doesn’t then I’ll have to return it. I doubt the burning chemical smell is safe.
(Update) After a few hours of use, the smell does subside so it would be best to have it running in a well ventilated area beforehand. The instructions does mention and warn about the smell due "residue from manufacturing" - I added a star from 3 to 4.

I use this to blow warm air on my hands when I'm sitting at my desk in my home office, and it definitely allows me to keep the heat in the house a couple of degrees cooler than I otherwise would need to. It seems like that's generally how people will use it.
Look at the design, though, and consider that the metal grill, which juts out slightly beyond the plastic bezel, is very, very close to the heating element inside. It's really easy to accidentally brush a hand against the metal, and it is *hot*. Also consider that desks generally have paperwork on them. I usually keep my desk pretty neat, but I could definitely see this being a fire hazard for someone with a different organizational style.
It's definitely effective, and I'll continue to use it, but I'm definitely aware that I need to be very conscientious about keeping anything flammable/burnable/meltable away from it when it is on. That's harder to do than with a typical space heater since this one needs to be so close to me to be effective.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but could be improved

Color: WhiteVerified Purchase
When I moved into my basement apartment, I knew the temperature was controlled by the landlord who owns & lives in the main house. I realized pretty quickly that it sometimes gets rather cold in the basement so I decided to get a small heater for the cold days. This unit is adequate.
This was the 5th or 6th model I tried. My favorite one kept dying after a 1-4 weeks but it had the best features including the best safety feature. However, this one works & I've used it on/off for months. My apartment is about 430sq ft, about 380 sq ft in the main room. Just one unit can raise the temperature 2-3 degrees. Not as good the other units I tried so I usually keep around my desk when I'm working (I work from home).
Safety:
This could be improved a lot. To turn the unit on/off, there is a physical switch on the back. If the unit tips over, it automatically turns off. The problem occurs when the unit is knocked off a desk or table. If the unit lands upright, it automatically turns back on. If it lands facing furniture it will be blowing hot air directly onto potentially flameable objects unless / until you notice it got knocked over. I have cats, I don't always notice right away. Because of this, I I do not leave this on at night or when I leave the apartment.
There is no temperature control. It's either on or off. There is no fan function (ie, blowing without the heating element on). It doesn't oscillate. It is relatively quiet but because it doesn't just stay turned off if it falls & lands upright, that's less of an issue since I won't leave it on at night.

This doesn’t bother me much, but just figured I’d put that out there. It is a very good size, and feels like good quality. It is a little noisy...so that is a huge downfall for me because it does sit on my desk. The heat output is okay, enough to do that job.

Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2020

Update: I've had this on my desk and used it while I worked. Just a little under 4 months and it's no longer working.
I was originally going to return this on the first day I got it. The reason is because I turned it on and after 20 minutes I couldn't feel any heat coming from it. It takes about 20+ minutes to heat up the air already in the room. So if you're in a cold room it's going to take about about 45 minutes to heat up the air surrounding the unit. Also, this is only for very small rooms. If you talk for a living, it really shouldn't face you. I believe it somehow puts out hot air that conflicts with your throat/voice. If you're using it in a small area, face the unit slightly diagonal away from your direct path to your face. Also, to feel the heat I have to put it pretty close to me and diagonally away from my direct path of speaking. It does heat up quicker if you're using a heater that doesn't put out a lot of heat. Basically, it takes the warm air surrounding the unit and makes it warmer. Since it does work I'm not going to return it. But I can't give it high marks either.
I think this would be a great heater for plants that need consistent warmth or in an area where pets like to sleep.

Basically a hand warmer. Bought it thinking to warm up a very small bathroom during winter before showering. The heat output is not great, although I love the safety turn off if the unit becomes off balanced. (I have a Chihuahua who can get pretty maniacal, especially around bath time, so appreciate this aspect greatly.) He enjoys this mini heater, outside the bathroom. It's just the right output for him. But, for me, I don't really feel much increase in temperature unless I have my hands directly and closely in front of it. The bathroom will heat up if I turn it on and leave it running with the door closed for about an hour or so. Again, not as warm as I would like. It still beats undressing for the shower in the cold! I do turn off, disconnect, and place the unit outside the room for the actual showering as, when I got the unit, it states not for use in the bathroom. One of the reasons I bought it was because I thought it would be. Nope. Must have missed that warning in the product description somewhere. There also is no temperature control, just on/off switch so no way to rev up the heat. In any case, it does make showering during cold weather more tolerable, and my twerpy senior dog loves it.

3.0 out of 5 stars bare bones design, case gets quite hot, strong plastic smell out of the box.
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021

Lower wattage rating equals less stress on wiring, less overall power consumption, etc., and is a benefit for US 120V users. This is a very simple device. There's a cut-out switch on the bottom, and a power switch on back. Removal of the box was accompanied by a strong chemical smell, which will presumably off-gas over time. If it falls over during operation, the cut-off switch is intended to cut power (to disable the heat). Less great: the metal grill gets quite hot during operation, and could potentially damage a delicate surface (wood/carpet) if it fell face-forward or is carelessly handled. Whether it would be hot enough to cause a burn or a fire if it fell over would be for a lab or testing agency to say. Caveat emptor - electric space heaters are hot by their nature, and many get quite hot during operation, not just this one.

Things to know:
it has no intensity knob, it's either on or off.
The "safety switch" is a simple button on the bottom, if the button is pressed it can go on, if released, off. i can imagine that breaking, making it trash either as a fire hazard or trash as a small box of nothing.
It's very small, not quite enough to heat my small bathroom in a reasonable time, it's less for heating space, better for putting your toes in front of to warm them. that's a fine purpose, but not what i (and other reviewers, clearly) needed.
It's small and LIGHT and the cord is very stiff? which means the kinked cord can shift the heater around..or you can just bump it, and as one reviewer said, that metal grid on the front gets very hot...
I think that's all of what i wanted to say. it's OK as a toe-warmer, but i wouldn't buy it again.

I like that this is small and it looks like a speaker. For context, I use this under my desk for some extra heat while working from home since the apartment heater doesn't do so well. I will say that the heat seems to be inconsistent at best. Sometimes, I'm sweating because it makes my little desk bubble area so hot, and sometimes, I can have my foot an inch in front of it and barely feel anything at all. I'm keeping it because it's not worth trying to get another small one that probably does the same.
I will say that I saw some other reviews that said this could heat a small room - like a bathroom - so I tried it when I showered since it's so cold when you get out, but it definitely did not heat the room at all. When it heats, it's best for a small area like a desk.
Pros:
The auto-off feature is great and definitely works.
It's small and looks like a speaker.
When it heats, it heats the immediate area around it well.
Cons:
It does not have multiple heat settings - only off and on.
It's hit or miss when it actually produces heat.
The bubble area of heat produced is very small. (it's under my desk and only heats my lower legs)

3.0 out of 5 stars Minimalist design isn't the best for this heater
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2020
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
Amazon's cube shaped heater might look cool, though I found it a hassle to use consistently. The metal grid where heat comes from slightly protrudes, making it easy to burn yourself if you're careless, as well as temporarily making it harder to pick up if it was used recently.
Not only that, but the design for turning it on and off is overall inconvenient, especially if you use it at a desk.
Because combined with the light weight, position and style of the power switch, you're likely needed to use both hands to hold it in place to keep it from moving while you press the switch in the back. This may not sound like a problem to most, but I found it very inconvenient as I also had to get up from my chair to reach and perform this procedure every time I wanted to switch the heater on and off.
Another inconvenience is the overall height of the heater. This, combined with the metal grid almost taking up an entire side of the heater, heat can potentially reach your mousepad if you keep it on the right side.
If I had to give suggestions for if they revamp this model, it would be to either reduce the size of the heat grid or make it slightly taller, as well as make the power switch into something easier to press.

I place it very close to my toes and it keeps them warm, but that's about it. It seems to be built for personal office use. Don't buy this if you want something that will heat up a room. You also can't change the temperature on this, it's other ON or OFF. Looking back I maybe should have just bought a larger one that heats the whole room, so i don't have to worry about accidentally bumping my feet into it.

While on, this heater should definitely be kept in a location where a child can't come in contact with it...yes, it gets that hot. Also, the heater's very light weight makes it easy to accidentally tip over. It does have a tip-over switch, but as hot as the screen gets...well, it wasn't worth the risk for me. I returned it.

I did some more shopping and got the Lasko 100 instead, for just under $10 and it heats my feet just fine. I can put it on it's side, aim it right towards the feet, and it just keeps on running, no safety switch due to the low wattage. Most other units shut off when you move them. I highly recommend "Oscillating Space Heater, Indoor Personal Heater, Electric Ceramic Heater with Over Heat Protection, Tip Over Protection, 3 Heat Settings, Quick Heat up for Home Office" for twice the price. By contrast, it can heat an entire room very well and keep you all snuggly. I hoped to save a few bucks for a permanent heater at the office, but instead wasted $18.99 on something better suited for a hamster. Save your money and buy one that works. I just ordered a second of the one recommended above. It's THAT good.

It smells so bad! It reminds me of a smell from another product I bought a couple years ago (HB Coffee Maker). The chemicals from the plastic are horrid and instantly started giving me a headache. I planned on using it in a workspace in my garage (which I use a respirator for and would have to use it) I’m wondering if it will mellow out, but like the other product, it didn’t. So I may send this back. I read so many good reviews so don’t know if they just changed something, but the fumes can not be safe.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insides shattered, dangerous; Amazon refuses to acknowledge packaging problem
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020
Color: PinkVerified Purchase
I purchased this because 500w is perfect for a power Well House heater using an external thermostat to turn the power off and on; the low power draw is ideal. When I received the package there were many parts rattling around; when I opened the device I observed that the mounts for the internals were completely destroyed (broken on both ends). Not only were pieces rattling around, but the insides themselves were moving freely. Had this been plugged in, it would likely have caused harm. This could have been avoided with appropriate packaging; I see that I'm not the only person posting a review about rattling parts. If your heater comes with rattling pieces inside please do NOT plug it on, for the sake of your own safety.
The option Amazon initially presented me with was to ship the package back to them which would require me driving to the nearest town over a $20 part that Amazon could have delivered in 1 piece with better packaging. Amazon may be crazy in their expectations, but I do not believe that we (consumers) should have to bow to the corporate giants; I would rather let Amazon keep the money if they choose to act this way (heaven sees everything, even the greedy corporations). I asked Amazon if they could ensure that a reorder would not be damaged; I pointed out that there were other reviews mentioning this and asked if they could help ensure that I didn't get caught in a cycle of loosing money/time to broken parts when there was obviously a packing problem. I was told that there was no problem with the packing and I could not expect to see any additional consideration given to any possible reorders. Amazon did finally agree to give me a refund without requiring me to wast more of my time or drive into town over their mistake. Now where do I get a 500w heater, should I risk trying this again?

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak, faulty, broken!
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021
Color: BlueVerified Purchase
Edit: I would give this Amazon Basics heater negative stars if I could. It worked, feebly, for about a month, and then died. I was not able to get it to work after it broke down, after not much use. It never produced much heat, and the fan was very weak.
So I ordered a better heater, not much more expensive, an old familiar brand I'll call "L."
L arrived today, and it's producing at least 10x more heat, and about 20x more fan power than the Amazon heater. And L is on the low fan setting (it has low and high), with the temperature dial at 5 out of 10. So it could be much more powerful than this. I think turning it all the way up would be too much, even though my bedroom started out being seriously cold! I might get another to keep my water pipes warm. L is an effective heater so far.
There was a slight chemical odor when L first turned on, for a few minutes. If you are chemically sensitive, you might want to turn it on at a high setting outside, in a dry place, and blow that chemical out for a while. I'm sensitive, but didn't react noticeably. But it's a good idea to vent it out if you can. I was cold, so I just used it indoors.
Comments below are my original review about this Amazon Basics heater:
This is a very weak heater. It might work to warm a small space, like under a desk. It doesn't produce much heat, and the fan moves very little air-- if you are lucky and the fan actually works. There is only one temperature and no temp control. After it was used for a month, it died. I smelled a faint burning odor, and the heater quit. Sometimes I am able to start it for a minute, but it always turns off, apparently because the fan will not work, causing the heater to overheat. My impression is that this heater is cheaply made and not dependable. And very weak.
It does turn off when tipped, however.
EDIT:
I wondered if the heater I got is defective and doesn't represent the majority of them. But after reading the many one-star reviews, it seems that I got a typical example of this heater: total junk.
It lasted just long enough to get past the refund period, but it only lasted that long because I was patient, and kept trying different outlets, letting it sit unplugged for longer, etc. I assumed that the problems was user error. Wrong-- the problem is this shoddy appliance! I probably can't get a refund for this poorly made heater.
A reminder: read the bad reviews before ordering! I wonder how this heater got so many positive ones.

Quit working in a month. This heater is only suited to heat you up a degree or two. Does not do much to keep you warm, maybe your hands if you put it on your desk and point it directly at them. It is fairly quite.

1.0 out of 5 stars A toe warmer not even a foot warmer

This product is a joke. I am not sure where the high reviews are coming from but I was tempted by the high reviews and jumped on to purchase the product. Let me explain, the place where I use it is an 18x18 feet office. The office kind of gets cold on cold days. This heater works hot for about 30 minutes and then turns to warm heat. There is no heat control/settings. The heater is good to warm your toes and not even your feet. It is a complete waste and I will be returning it back to Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously Weak Fan
Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I wanted a lower draw heater because a 1500 watt model kept causing the breaker to cut power. The room is small, so it seemed that a 500 watt model would do the job. While the temp coming out of the heater seems fine, the fan output is so poor that it feels like nothing is coming out.
With the weak fan, this unit is basically worthless.
Another unfortunate design flaw is that the "tip-over" switch doesn't function on carpet, so you have to place the unit on something hard, like a book.

But the size is perfect for a small room and it looks cute.

I have a small bathroom and I bought this so I could put it on a timer and have it run an hour before I wake so I dont have to turn my furnace on in the morning. I have it run for an hour and a half and it does nothing. You can feel the heat if you stand within 18" of it but even if I close the door at night, its barely a degree or two warmer.

1.0 out of 5 stars this is not 500 watt output....it is 1172 watts!

this heater is advertised as a 500 watt heater which is exactly what I wanted. I measured the watts at the plug with a watt meter and was astounded to see it drawing 1172 watts. This heater works quite well but I only want a heater that is 500 watts. I can get a 1500 watt heater with a low setting at 750 watts that consumes less electricity. This heater should not be advertised as a 500 watt heater.

Used to heat a walk-in closet converted into a desk/office space of about 3x6 ft. Unit seemed alright at first, but would overheat and then wouldn't turn on for a bit. At just about the month mark, it's no longer turning on after a night of being off entirely.
Seemed like a good little unit for the price, but died with a month of regular use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!

Bought this to replace a small ceramic heater that I used for maybe 15 years that finally gave out. It’s used to just take the chill out of a small bathroom before a shower. First the only positive: this is small and lightweight. Now the negatives. There is no adjustment for heat or fan output. You switch it on and you get what it gives, no adjustments whatsoever. There is no mention of that in the description. The amount of heat it throws out is akin to a “normal” small ceramic heater on the low heat and fan setting. It won’t warm a cool very small room unless it runs forever. Secondly, unlike most ceramic heaters, the faceplate does get hot to the touch quickly. How this heater got an “Amazon’s Choice” designation is beyond me. Lastly, the price is only a couple of bucks less than comparable small ceramic heaters that offer heat and fan settings and far more heat production. I bought it because of the Amazon Choice designation and the small dimensions. Bad idea.

1.0 out of 5 stars Compact low wattage fan forced heater, in theory

When I removed this heater from the box, there was something rattling around inside of the heater. I removed the back , and found that a component from the circuit board inside had broken loose . The component appears to be a capacitor ( circuit board labeled L2 at that location). I further determined that the circuit board controls the fan. There was no damage on the outside of the plastic case of the heater, and the shipping box had only a slight bit of damage ( crushed) to one corner. I believe that the capacitor broke off of the circuit board during assembly of the heater at the factory. I also think that this heater would not be stable on a carpeted surface.

This was an awesome little heater, until I got it plugged in and realized that I have to crouch/crawl under my desk every time I need it on or off with a little button on the BACK of the heater! What were you thinking??!! The convenience of a "foot" heater is being able to also push a button on the top quickly. I need this feature so I don't have to leave my chair or bang my head on my desk trying to use this function. Fix this...and you'll sell a bunch of these! Had to return.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 1.5 hours

This heater stopped working after only 1.5 hours of use. Instructions on the cord say to unplug it for 30 minutes, then plug it back in. That didn't work. The fact that the manufacturer put this tag on the cord says a lot. They already know that it stops working frequently. I've tried the unplug method, the wiggle the cord in the outlet recommendation that I found in a review and no heat. My new office is freezing, so I guess I'm just going to be cold until I get a new one. Worst heater ever. Zero stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Smells terrible

I don’t know anything about how it heats indoors. I turned it on outside to get rid of the “new heater” smell, and the smell never went away. I gave it four days before I gave up.
Then I took it inside and took it apart to see if just the case part smelled, and all of it smells to some degree. Also, as you can see in the picture, the ceramic part is six little spacers between metal parts. This is not a ceramic heater; it’s a heater with a little ceramic in it in a stinky plastic case.

Seriously poor design. The metal face gets very hot, and it protrudes out past the plastic body. It's pretty woobly & it tips easily. If it falls face down the grill will burn whatever it falls on. Then there is no handle to pick it up with, and the unit is just large enough that it's wider than my hand-span and I can't grab it, besides to pull it by it's plug. Seeeeeriously poor design.
